British EV technology company Electrogenic has acquired the business of TREMEC Electric GT, establishing a permanent base in the United States as it enters the next stage of its North American expansion.

The acquisition of the California-based business strengthens Electrogenic’s position in the EV powertrain sector and provides the company with a base in Huntington Beach to further scale its North American operations.

The move follows years of sustained growth for Electrogenic in the North American market. With the establishment of its US headquarters, the company plans to deliver its EV powertrain technology to a larger customer base while providing enhanced local service.

The USA is our most important market and we wanted to provide additional support to our US partners, as well as establishing a strategic base in California as part of our ongoing SDV software development programme.”

He added that the move would enable Electrogenic to accelerate new products, extend manufacturing options and further enhance its service offering for new and existing customers across North America.

Founded in 2014, TREMEC Electric GT specialises in electric vehicle powertrain systems design and integration. The company develops turnkey EV powertrains for low-volume manufacturers, supports specialist vehicle builders with integration and supplies the aftermarket conversion sector with its range of e-Crate ‘swap’ systems.

These complete plug-and-play packages electrify a wide range of vehicles while retaining their existing frame, body, driveline and suspension. TREMEC Electric GT has previously electrified vehicles ranging from classic Porsches to American muscle cars.

TREMEC Electric GT’s growth has been limited by its need for sophisticated vehicle software and control systems to complement its powertrains. Electrogenic’s software and control technology is intended to address this requirement.

For Electrogenic, the acquisition builds on its international growth by adding a permanent US base to its Oxford, UK, headquarters and expanding global network of partner installers.

Drummond said, “The teams have been working together for some time and the acquisition seemed a natural evolution for both TREMEC, Electrogenic and the Huntington Beach team. Electrogenic gains a technical centre of expertise on the USA West Coast and the Huntington Beach specialists get lots of new tech toys to play with.”

He added that Electrogenic and TREMEC would continue to explore future opportunities in advanced technology and manufacturing. The US operation will also provide greater support to Electrogenic’s North American partner installers.

Electrogenic’s portfolio includes bespoke EV conversions, its range of ‘drop-in’ kits, turnkey electric powertrains for car manufacturers and applications for the defence sector. Its powertrains use proprietary EV technology developed in-house by a research and development team comprising automotive engineers, programmers and high-voltage electrical experts.

The company develops and manufactures its own technology, including proprietary vehicle control software, microprocessor designs for driver interface and vehicle body control, and digital dashboards.

Its conversions also use mechanical components including a system for creating high-density battery packs and compact in-line and transverse reduction gearboxes manufactured by Electrogenic in the UK. The packaging is designed to preserve the existing vehicle structure and architecture without cutting or drilling, making all Electrogenic conversions entirely reversible.

Electrogenic’s bespoke conversions are completed at its Oxford headquarters and will now also be undertaken in Huntington Beach, California. Its ‘drop-in’ kit range is offered internationally through a network of partner installers, which will now receive technical support on Pacific Time as well as GMT.
